iHeartMedia Classic Rock “Big 105.9” WBGG-FM Fort Lauderdale/Miami made a musical shift and repositioned in mid-December.
Shedding its “South Florida’s Classic Rock” positioning for “Miami’s Greatest Hits”, the move came with a playlist adjustment. The station widened its playlist from 230ish songs played in a week to over 330 with most of the new additions being either 1980s and 1990s Pop/Rock crossovers and some 90s/2000s Rock titles. Top spins were dropped in half from 25 to 13 with every song that received 10 or more in a week being from the 1980s. Among the songs added were titles from 4 Non Blondes, A Flock of Seagulls, B-52’s, Duran Duran, Evanescence, Huey Lewis & The News, Kenny Loggins, No Doubt, Offspring, Peter Gabriel, and John Waite.
WBGG-FM rose from a 2.4 to 2.8 share in the December 2024 Nielsen Audio ratings ahead of the musical shift.
Perhaps this is proprietary information, but can I ask how you were able to track the playlist size? That’s interesting! I figured you got the titles due to media base, I don’t have one of them fancy accounts so I’m not sure if it’s also reporting playlist sizes as well. Regardless, interesting! Especially in an era where a lot of iHeart classic rock stations are going to the national log. I suppose this is the new era of the rock leaning classic hits playlist.
Good grief! What a short playlist! Talk about burn… Bring back WAXY!
Sounds like “102.7 The Beach, Miami’s Classic Hits” WMXJ-FM Pompano Beach. Same tight playlist of rock and pop hits from the same era. Maybe a few of the usual 70s tunes will pop up. Bring back WAXY is right! Not the same music but the same spirit.
It definitely brings Big and the Beach closer together. Some of that is how the Beach has evolved back to the largely pop/rock station it was as Majic 102.7. For a while, there was a lot more disco and freestyle in the mix on 102.7.
